The plan for this courtyard space had to accommodate a yard for the horses whose stables looked out onto it and the family's cars and land rover which had to be able to driven into the garage via this space. However the main criteria was to provide interest within what was a large barren space devoid of plant life.
The visual effect within this courtyard space was very important as the main rooms in the house looked out onto it. A bold geometric design worked best here so that all the above elements could be included.
The large still pool was included so that it would reflect the sky and bring light and movement into this space. It was decided however that this pool was not practical as it was near the stable yard so whilst the shape of this design was kept this area was transformed into an orchard.
Planting was selected to reflect the moorland and fields of the surrounding hills so different grasses such as Stipa arundinacea and Miscanthus sinensis Kleine Silberspinne, combined with Echinacea and Verbena bonariensis were chosen to bring a feeling of the outside in. The trees within the courtyard were chosen to reflect the woodland near the house but also to provide a dominant structure, dappled shade and height in this previously barren, flat area. Varieties of Birch, Amelanchier and Acer were considered. Evergreens such as Fatsia japonica and Phyllostachys nigra provided structure whilst the box balls added an architectural element and guided visitors to the front door.
