This garden represents the essence of a garden room designed as extra living space. The simplicity of design and smooth clean lines avoid clutter and the zig zag shape gives the illusion of movement and space and allows for deep planting beds around the garden. The galvanised steel retaining walls give strong horizontal emphasis, which contrast against the high fence surrounding the space. Retaining beds also solved the problem of the poor drainage and shallow soil within the site.
Materials: anti-slip decking, concrete paving, galvanised angle iron (retaining walls), stainless steel water tanks, rocks and pebbles, planting. Colours of hard landscaping are muted, papery, metallic and shiny to reflect light into the space.
Planting is chosen for its shape and texture including Fargesia nitida, ferns such as Dryopteris erythrosora, grasses and structural shrubs. Less structural perennials are used as fillers while the shrubs establish and to give added interest throughout the months. Planting is also chosen with insects, birds and the owner's cat in mind!
