    Project Brief:
This garden was designed for a young couple in Hern Hill in London. They had already developed a decked balcony area which looked out over the garden. Initial ideas were to create a strong simple shape which was effective when viewed from above and would transform this garden into a bold uncluttered space. Hard landscaping was to include reclaimed paving materials and slatted wooden benches painted the same colour as the deck which would also double up as much needed storage boxes. Planting was chosen to give a lush leafy feel and contrast of shape with the bold leaves of Fatsia japonica, Hydrangea sargentiana and two tree ferns, Dicksonia antartica, against the delicate leaves of bamboo and grasses. Vigorous plants such as Phyllostachys aurea were chosen so that the garden could be brought up almost to the level of the decked balcony.
